Day 15: Ride The East – Battleboro NC to Warsaw NC

Today’s Highlights:
Today we rode 101 miles from Battleborro to Warsaw. We were a little lucky with the weather. The morning temperature was in the 70’s. The humidity was so high that I was completely soaked a few miles into the ride, but at least it was comfortably cool. We also had very overcast skies until 10:30, helping to keep us cooler. In mid-day, the sun came out and it quickly warmed into the 80. Although warm and very humid, it was far better than the previous few days. We also had a nice little tailwind most of the day as we headed south.
We cycled through very rural areas of NC, passing farms all day. Several towns we passed seemed tiny and nearly abandoned.
I reached the hotel at 1:45pm, only 6-1/2 hours after I started. It was one of my fasted century rides. I also rode alone all day, without the aid of drafting with other cyclists. We are staying in a really dumpy hotel, and McDonald’s is the best restaurant within miles. That’s not a very good way to finish a 101 mile ride.

Day 14: Ride The East – Emporia VA to Rocky Mount NC

Today’s Highlights:
We had a late start at 8:00 today, because we only had to ride 59 miles. Although most people wanted to leave earlier to beat the heat, the staff prefers that we don’t get to the next hotel before noon. So we had a leisurely morning, loaded the luggage van at 8:00, and started our very hot and humid ride.
The heat was the only big challenge today. Our route was flat, and the roads were good. I cycled with Rene, Barry and Mike for the first 20 miles and averaged 17.7 mph. At mile-14, we stopped at the North Carolina border to take picture. I had to drop off their paceline after 20 miles, slow down a little, and stopped for a few more pictures. Our one SAG stop for the day was at mile-27 in River Falls Park, along the Roanoke River in South Weldon. Some really smart people were rafting on the river. I would have traded my bike for a raft today.
From the SAG stop, I cycled alone for the last 32 miles. My focus was mainly on drinking and moving along quickly to get out of the heat. It really detracts from sightseeing. Most of the route took us past farms of cotton, tobacco, corn and other crops I am not familiar enough with – perhaps soybean. The tiny village of Halifax had some interesting historic building, once visited by George Washington (he was everywhere) and Lafayette in the 1790s and early 1800s. We passed through some very depressed small towns. Although I have seen plenty of poor city and rural neighborhoods, there was something unusual about these. I can’t pinpoint what it was, but it seems like something I would only expect to see in a movie about the past.

Day 13: Ride The East – Mechanicsville VA to Emporia VA

Today’s Highlights:
Our 91-mile ride from Mechanicsville to Emporia was generally flat and on country roads with good surfaces. I was able to average over 16 mph today and finish in under seven hours. The challenge was the heat. It was in the 70s when we started, but also very humid. Two hours later it was in the 80s, and after three hours it was between 90 and 100. So the last half of the ride was extremely hot, and a challenge for us all. Some of the cyclist who were riding slower wisely got in the van after 60 miles and shuttled to the hotel.
At mile 14, we reached the halfway point of our route from Maine and Florida. Kathi marked the road, and we all stopped there for pictures. Our route also led us through several Civil War battlefields, commemorated with plaques. I would have like to stop at each one and learn about the history, but I was too focused on getting the miles done quickly to get out of the heat. All of our route was through rural farms and forest. We passed over the James River on the Benjamin Harrison Memorial Bridge. The size of the river was quite impressive.
For about 1/3 of today’s ride, I joined a small group of riders. Otherwise, I pushed on by myself.

Day 12: Ride The East – Fredericksburg VA to Mechanicsville VA

Today’s Highlights:
Today’s ride was only 72 miles with rolling terrain and few significant hills. The morning was cool and comfortable, but it did warm up quickly and was in the 80s after 11:00 AM. I arrived in Mechanicsville before 1:00 and avoided the hottest part of the day on the road.
Near the start of the ride we were on a nice bike path for a couple miles. Then we entered the Fredericksburg Battlefield Park and rode on a quiet park road through the forest for several miles. It was a very pleasant start. After riding with Rene and Barry for 12 miles, I slowed down and cycled alone for an hour or so. A group of seven caught up to me, and I joined them to the first rest stop at mile 31. For the second half of the ride, I cycled with Allen and/or the three riders who joined us yesterday – Gene, Don and Dona. Larry and Steve sometime joined us. It was nice to have company today. There wasn’t much scenery to slow down for. Our route was mostly on quiet country roads, some of them very rough and some gentler on the saddle. Mechanicsville is just outside of Richmond VA to the northeast.

Day 11: Ride The East – Washington DC to Fredericksburg VA

Today’s Highlights:
For the first time on this trip, we had a group start and stayed together for the first 15 miles of the ride. Shane, the ride leader, guided us through the city streets of DC for a few miles, then on the bike path along the Potomac River and over the I395 bridge. Entering Alexandria VA, we continued together on the Mt Vernon Bike Path for another ten miles. It’s a beautiful path that winds along the Potomac and through the woods, and in places dips and rises. It’s quite fun. There were several boardwalks over wetlands. For walkers, there is a lot of nature to obverse, including Osprey and Eagles. But we traveled along quickly, passing by the views, flora and fauna. It is impressive how many people use the bike path, many commuting to work in Alexandria, Rosslyn and DC.
I really enjoyed cycling with the whole group this morning, since most days I cycle alone. After leaving the bike path, I cycled with 4 or 5 guys until about half way – 50 miles, then spent about 30 miles by myself, and rejoined Rene, Barry and Allen near the end.
While we were all together, I tried to get pictures of the group. It not very safe to do that in a line of cyclists, so I was very selective. It was also the prettiest part of the route. Once off the bike path, there was nothing special about the scenery. We cycled on major roads, past malls and industrial area, or on tree-lined streets with no open views. We passed some mini-mansions and only a few nice farms.
The afternoon got hot, in the high 80’s and above 90 in places. I finished the 93 miles at 3:30 PM, after eight hours on the road.
We had four new riders join us today. One couple is from Canada, one from Maryland and one from Virginia. We now have 22 riders and our four staff people on the road.

Day 10: Ride The East – Washington DC

Today’s Highlights:
This was our first rest day after nine straight days of cycling. The group stayed on New Hampshire Avenue, not far from the White House. I spent the night and most of today at Chris and Stacia’s house. I had a leisurely evening and morning, and a wonderful visit. We drove into DC around noon, making my first visit to Barracks Row, and enjoyed a nice lunch at a Greek restaurant, Cava Mezze. We took a walk up to Eastern Market and caught a nice view of the Capitol building along the way.
In the evening, Chris returned me to the hotel. I had dinner with Rene, Veronica and Eric, then got organized for tomorrows 93 mile ride.

Day 9: Ride The East – Hunt Valley MD to Washington DC

Today’s Highlights:
We had beautiful weather for our 80 mile ride into Washington DC today, with lower humidity and temperatures started out in the 60s. The roads we traveled on in Maryland were in excellent condition, although there was no shoulder and more traffic compared to other places we have ridden so far. Our route arched far around the west of Baltimore through very nice farmland. You wouldn’t know that we were near some of the most heavily populated parts of the Northeast. The first fifty five miles were hilly. A tailwind occasionally helped us out, and the last 25 miles were fairly flat. At mile 56, we got on the Rock Creek Trail, following Rock Creek. It was narrow, winding and rolling. It would be really fun on a mountain bike. Since the trial was a bit rough, we were routed onto the nearby roads whenever possible. So we continued to use the trail, side streets and parkways all the way to Pennsylvania Avenue in DC. I was really surprised how one could cycle or walk into Washington DC without going on any major road and being mostly in the woods.
I reached Pennsylvania Avenue around 1:45, and it was only a mile more to Washington Circle and to the hotel. After cleaning up, I met my son Chris and drove to his house to spend the night and the first rest day. The group will spend tomorrow in DC and get a nice rest after nine days and over 650 miles of cycling.

Day 8: Ride The East – Lancaster PA to Hunt Valley MD

Today’s Highlights:
We were pleasantly surprised to learn that the route for day-8 was changed to utilize a 40-mile rail trail. Instead of the very hilly route used on previous years, we had a very flat ride today. It was also only 63 miles, so it was a relatively easy Sunday ride. We started at 7:20 AM, riding on town roads. Ten minutes into the ride, we were greeted by Debbie, her son and his wife. Debbie rode cross country with ABB in 2002 with me. She then got a job with ABB and was on staff for this ride and others for many years. Everyone enjoyed being cheered on.
We continued on the streets of Columbia PA, and then crossed the Susquehanna River on the Veterans Memorial Bridge into Wrightsville. For about 10 miles, we rode passed farms and shopping centers, then through a small section of the city of York. In York, we picked up the Heritage Rail Trail.
The rail trail had a few small sections of pavement, but for most of its 20 miles in Pennsylvania it was crushed stone and a smooth enough surface for a road bike. The railroad tracks were still in place, unlike most rail trails today, and there was one town where you could take a ride on a steam train. The trail was tree-lined, and we spent the rest of the day under the canopy of the trees.
We had one rest stop today in Seven Valleys, around mile 30 of our route. There were three large bike sculptures there. Along the way, many little towns had eateries for trail travelers. We also followed a small river for much of the way. At the halfway point on the trail, we reached New Freedom Station near the border of PA and Maryland. It just started to rain as I arrived at the station, and I made a brief stop for water and a snack. The rain shower passed quickly, and I pressed on. As we traveled over the border into Maryland, the trail changed from a slight incline to a nice gradual descent. It also changed from a well maintained crushed stone trail to a two track dirt and grass path. There was so much water from the rain, it formed two little streams down the hill. For the next 20 miles, we rode in these little streams and through mud. By the time we finished everyone’s legs and back and bikes were covered with mud. At the hotel, we immediately went to the back parking lot and hosed off our bodies and bikes. Once clean, we could go into the hotel.
It was a fun day, with quiet roads on a Sunday morning, 40 miles of off-road cycling, comfortable temperatures, a delightful rain shower, and riding through puddles and mud like a kid again.

Day 7: Ride The East – Easton PA to Lancaster PA

Today’s Highlights:
We left the hotel in Easton at 6:45 AM on this quiet Saturday morning. It was our first cool morning with temps in the low 60s, which was very comfortable. After a short pedal through town, we were once again on quiet country roads. It was another hilly day, with over 3700 feet of climbing in 63 miles (also our shortest ride so far). Some sections were very hilly, but we also enjoyed miles with mildly rolling hills. There’s no such thing as flat so far.
After 25 miles, we broke out of the woods and into Amish farm country. It was refreshing to see the big vistas and open sky. We passed crops of corn, soybean, tobacco, and a few others. I also saw many interesting stone houses, each one unique in design and stone.
By 10 AM, about 45 miles into the ride, the temperature was in the 80s. My bike computer registered 98 degrees on the open road 10 miles from the end of my ride. It wasn’t uncomfortable though, as we are getting conditioned now. The scenery made it enjoyable too.
We have completed one week of the tour now, covering 510 miles.

Day 6: Ride The East – Easton PA to Pottstown PA

Today’s Highlights:
Our 73-mile ride today took us from Easton to Pottstown, Pennsylvania, with about 20 miles in New Jersey just across the Delaware River. The morning started out hot as we rode through the cities of Easton and Phillipsburg. Once in the country, the shady, flat road along the Delaware River gave us a comfortable fifteen mile ride with only a few hills. At mile 20, we climbed a very steep hill, reported to be up to 18% grade. It didn’t take long though, and the first rest stop was shortly after the top of the hill. From there, we remained at the higher elevation moving further away from the Delaware and deeper into Pennsylvania. It was all up and down hills, and we logged in more than 3700′ of climbing. We passed by some farms and rural neighborhoods. The town of Skippack was especially nice. Some days, the ride is more about doing miles, and less about scenery and sites. This was one of those days.
